  • Homosalate can help stabilize other UV filters, such as avobenzone and oxybenzone, preventing their degradation upon sun exposure and maintaining the sunscreen's effectiveness.
  • Enhances Other Filters: It has good dissolving properties for other solid sunscreen agents like avobenzone and can help enhance the overall UV protection of a formulation.
  • Water Resistance: As an oil-soluble ingredient, homosalate can contribute to the water resistance of sunscreen products.
  • UVB Absorption: Homosalate acts as a chemical UV filter by absorbing ultraviolet B (UVB) rays in the wavelength range of 295-315 nm, with peak absorption at 306 nm.     UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburn and contribute to skin cancer.
  • Safety Concerns:While widely used, there are some concerns about homosalate's potential to disrupt hormones and its ability to penetrate the skin, though more research is needed to fully assess these risks.
    • Mechanism:The salicylic acid portion of the homosalate molecule absorbs UVB rays, while the hydrophobic trimethyl cyclohexyl group helps prevent it from dissolving in water, contributing to its effectiveness as a sunscreen ingredient.
      • Sunscreens: It's a key ingredient in many commercially available sunscreens, helping to protect the skin from the damaging effects of UVB rays.
      • Other Products: It can also be used in other products, like perfumes, to protect them from UV damage during storage, preventing color changes or cloudiness.
      • Function:Homosalate is an organic compound that absorbs ultraviolet (UV) radiation, specifically UVB rays (with wavelengths between 295 nm and 315 nm), and converts it into less harmful infrared radiation (heat).
        • Function:Homosalate is an organic compound that absorbs ultraviolet (UV) radiation, specifically UVB rays (with wavelengths between 295 nm and 315 nm), and converts it into less harmful infrared radiation (heat). Endocrine Disruption: In vitro studies have suggested that homosalate may have estrogenic and anti-androgenic activity, potentially interfering with hormone systems.     However, in vivo studies and assessments by regulatory bodies like the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) in Europe have provided inconclusive evidence for endocrine disruption in humans at permitted concentrations. The SCCS has deemed homosalate safe for use as a UV filter in cosmetics up to a maximum concentration of 0.5% in the final product, a significant reduction from the previously allowed 10%
        • Concerns exist regarding the potential impact of homosalate on coral reefs, with some studies suggesting it may contribute to coral bleaching. As a result, some regions have banned or are considering banning sunscreens containing homosalate.
        • Homosalate has been detected in various environmental matrices, including freshwater, seawater, and wastewater, indicating its release into the environment through recreational activities and wast.
